and so the
league begins......
A glorious day
at Kempton for the start of the league campaign with visitors Byfleet at the
Tiger Den. After not winning the toss Ks we asked to bat on what looked like a
decent track. New look opening pair of Ellis and Charlie did not last as long
as expected with both back in the clubhouse before 25 runs were scored. Once
into the middle order wickets consistently and ks were pegged back at 68 for
6, then 89 for 7 and 97 for 8. Fortunately, one of our strengths is the depth
in the middle/lower order with no perceived drop off in quality. That was
evident as Hendo and Danny proceeded to take the score to respectability.
Hendo finished not out on 63 and Danny was finally out for 20 as we set a
total of 146.
In return we
began the innings with the dual spin of Danny and Nip. On this occasion both
were a touch expensive as we allowed Byfleet to reach 48 without loss. The
double change to Andy and Joel, coupled with tight fielding, soon brought
rewards. Five wickets then fell for 40 runs and the game swung towards Ks.
Unfortunately a couple of dropped catches and loose bowling enabled Byfleet to
get within toughing distance of the target. One final roll of the dice was
taken with the introduction of Hendo, and the new ball. Instant rewards as two
wickets followed from Hendo's first over and then Joel followed up with one
from the subsequent over. Byfleet were truly reeling at 140 for 8 and an
unlikely victory for Ks looked possible.
However,
fairytales do not always happen and Clough saw the visitors home.
In hindsight
we know the batting needs to improve and if early catches were taken the
result could have been different.
